Is Museveni Son Stepping Up To Inherit Uganda Throne?

The son of Uganda’s president, a lieutenant general, announced his retirement from the military on Tuesday, paving the way for a possible presidential bid in 2026.

According to critics of President Yoweri Museveni, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has served in the military for over 20 years, was pushed up the ranks by his father.

Many Ugandans believe Kainerugaba is being groomed to be Museveni’s successor.

“After 28 years of service in my magnificent military, the best military in the world,” Kainerugaba wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, without explaining why he was retiring.

Museveni, 77, who has controlled the east African country since 1986, has frequently refuted allegations that he wants to give over power to his son.

Kainerugaba, a frequent Twitter user who backed Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, helped heal Uganda’s troubled relations with neighboring Rwanda this year after visiting Kigali and meeting President Paul Kagame.

Supporters of Kainerugaba, 47, have been pushing a campaign on social media and elsewhere for him to run for government in 2026, despite the fact that he has not formally proclaimed his desire to run.

Soldiers are not allowed to participate in politics under Ugandan legislation.
