President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered that the Sh5,800 registration cost for bodaboda operators in Kenya be waived.Â
From March 21, the operators have 60 days to register their motorcycles, organize SACCOs, and receive smart licenses in order to be in operation.
According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the president authorized the cost waiver to guarantee that no one has a reason not to register and be compliant.
In the country, there are over 2.4 million boda boda riders.
He went on to say that the riders will be registered at all Huduma Centres around the country. As part of the verification procedure, they will need to have certificates of good behavior and join a Sacco.
“If you do not have an identity document, all of the relevant parties will be present at the centers to help you obtain one,” he stated.
He made the remarks when meeting with a group of bodaboda riders in Nairobi on Wednesday.
