Pumwani, Uhuru Park Yet To Get Title Deeds

The Pumwani Maternity Hospital and the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) are among the 1,500 public assets with no title deeds.

According to Farida Karoney, Cabinet Secretary for Lands, other important public sites in Nairobi that lack title certificates include Uhuru and Central Parks.

Due to the unavailability of this critical document, prime government land is in risk of being invaded by private developers.

Ms Karoney informed the Senate Devolution Committee that the lease for Pumwani Maternity Hospital ended in 2012 and that the Nairobi City County (NCC) had made no effort to extend it.

Pumwani Maternity, the largest referral hospital for pregnant women’ deliveries in the four counties that comprise the Nairobi metropolitan region, has already lost four staff quarters to private developers.

Uhuru Park is 32 acres (12.9 hectares) in size, while Central Park is around 20 acres. The two parks are in the Nairobi Central Business District and are bordered by Kenyatta Avenue, Nyerere Avenue, and the Uhuru Highway.
