The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday upheld UEFA’s ban on Russian teams taking part in its competitions while CAS deliberates on the case.
The ruling however does not apply to Russia’s chances of being reinstated for FIFA World Cup qualifying, as the interim judgment comes before a full hearing in the weeks ahead.
Football governing bodies FIFA and UEFA decided together that all Russian teams, whether national or club will be suspended from participation in FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) appealed to CAS but the president of the Appeals Arbitration Division denied a request to lift the ban until CAS takes a final decision.
“The challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in UEFA competitions,” read a CAS statement.
The CAS decisions on the requests to stay the execution of the FIFA decisions for the duration of the CAS proceedings are likely to be issued at the end of this week.
Since the FIFA and UEFA decisions, Spartak Moscow has been unable to play their Europa League round of 16 ties with RB Leipzig thus allowing the German club to advance to the quarter-finals unimpeded while Russia’s national team are currently unable to play their World Cup qualification fixtures at the end of this month.
Russia was scheduled to host Poland in a World Cup qualifying playoff on March 24.
Sport’s top court said it was likely to make a decision “at the end of this week” on the Football Union of Russia’s bid to overturn Fifa’s decision to throw Russia out of the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup.
If the ban remains by that time, they would be unable to progress to the 2022 FIFA world Cup scheduled to be played in November-December.
