The government has extended the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in Marsabit County last month by another 30 days.
In a gazette notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the curfew between 6 pm to 6 am takes effect from 1st June 2022 and shall remain in force for 30 days.
According to Matiang’i, the threat of insecurity posed by disturbances in the county necessitated the extension.
“The order shall apply during the hours of darkness between 6 o’clock in the evening and 6 o’clock in the morning with effect from June 1, 2022 and shall remain in effect for a period of 30 days,” the notice states in part.
He also stated that there shall be no public gatherings, processions, or movement, either alone or in groups during the curfew period.
“Under this order there shall be no public gatherings processions or movement either alone or as a group during the period of the curfew except as has been permitted in writing by the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” the notice adds.
The CS declared a month-long curfew and operation in the volatile North Eastern County last month to strengthen a disarmament exercise against insecurity.
The “Rudisha Amani Marsabit” operation, which began on May 2 and has since expanded to Komu-Sublocation in neighboring Isiolo county and the Sololo area near the Kenya-Ethiopia border, aims to weed out illegal firearms used by bandits in the county and arrest suspects behind the criminal acts.
