A street boy who collects garbage in Westlands on June 13,2022 shocked the entire courtroom in Kibera law court with his British accent when he took to the dock to defend himself.
Griffin Nyongesa appearing before magistrate Jacqueline Ojwang pleaded with her in British language not send him to jail for the offence he is alleged to have committed.
He mitigated after pleading guilty to being in possession of 24 rolls of bhang of street value Ksh1,200.
According to the charge sheet, Nyongesa was arrested on June 9 along Chiromo lane in Westlands within Nairobi County with the said Narcotics.
The prosecuting counsel Brenda Maiyo told the court that the accused person was arrested after the officers who were on their normal patrol spotted him and noticed he was looking suspicious.
In his mitigation, the man who seemed well educated said that he was a family man and had only Sh 1,000 between him and poverty boundary.
“As you see me here your honor, I have only Sh1,000 between me and poverty, please forgive me,” he told the court.
It was how he articulated his words with a British accent that perplexed the entire courtroom as normally, most of the street families are considered illiterate.
He also told the court that he had been living on the streets for over 16 years and had been smoking bhang as he collected garbage.
“I smoke bhang so that I can collect garbage without stress,” he added.
The magistrate directed that the matter be mentioned on June 22, 2022 for probation report to be presented to the court on the same date before the court pronounces its verdict.
