Five former Homa Bay County Assembly officials have been convicted of fraud amounting to Ksh.27.8 million.

The five include; former County Assembly clerk Bob Kephas Otieno, former Chief Finance Officer Caroline Sang, former Majority Leader Michael Owino Ooro former County Assembly Finance Controller Maurice Amek and former Minority Leader Isack Ouso Nyandege.

They were charged with 11 counts including conspiracy to commit corruption, unlawful acquisition of public property, and abuse of office among other charges.

However, two officials including former member of the county assembly service board Judith Omogi and former cashier Edwin Omondi Okello were acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove their case before the trial magistrate.

The accused are alleged to have defrauded the county government through procurement in contravention of the procurement laws.

They were arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over their links to a company that was paid for goods and services that were never delivered as recorded in the County Assembly record books.
