UDA: Summon Mutyambai, Owino Over Jacaranda Chaos

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has written to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) about what they call pre-planned attempts to disrupt a Kwanza rally in Kenya.

On Sunday, chaos reigned at Nairobi’s Jacaranda Grounds, prompting police to fire tear gas canisters at a rowdy crowd from the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio political camps.

After arguments between the two political camps over a double booking of the premises, police officers sealed off the venue.

In a letter to IBNC chair Wafula Chebukati, UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina claimed that the Azimio Coalition and its constituent ODM Party used the National Police Service to create tension and disrupt the rally.

“The blatant use of Babu Owino’s letterhead clearly overemphasis his overreaching and unacceptable abuse of the National Police Service in blocking our candidates from holding his peaceful campaign meeting scheduled for 19th June 2022 . His approach is confrontational and militant in nature and action must be taken against Babu Owino,” Ms. Maina stated.

Owino canceled his planned prayer meeting at Jacaranda on Sunday amid growing concern about the status of the Kenya Kwanza rally.

In an apparent attempt to avert a clash, Owino urged his supporters to stay away from the venue, stating that he was doing so for the sake of peace.
