Andrew Tuimur, CBS, CAS Ministry of Water Sanitation and Irrigation (MoWSI), is inspecting water, sanitation, and irrigation projects being undertaken by the Ministry in Kitui and Machakos Counties.
Tuimur said the government is undertaking various water and sanitation projects in the county which include both small, middle and large projects with the aim of increasing water access to mwananchi.
He stated that currently the water coverage within Kitui County is 47% and the sewerage and sanitation coverage is 17% and 68% respectively.
He emphasised that the government is committed to improve water supply in Kitui county from the basis of strategic plan 2018-2023 implementation.
TAWWDA intends to increase water, sewage and sanitation coverage to 67%,26% and 74% respectively.
The CAS visited Maliku borehole water supply project which is located in Kitui County.
The Maliku Borehole is a project under the drought mitigation program.
It provides potable water to a population of about 6,500 persons within the area including Maliku Girls Secondary and Maliku Primary.
Total volume of water produced by the project is 11.5m3 per hour.
The implementing Agency is Tanathi and has costed KES15Million and was financed by the Government through the drought fund.
Thereafter the CAS visited the Kitui Waste Water treatment plant. The project is complete and operational and serves 25,000 residents of Kitui town and the last mile connectivity is ongoing for water and sewerage and the target for sewerage is to connect 3000 connections.
The entire water and sewerage project costed 2.2b with the sewerage component costing 350m.
The project was funded by GoK in collaboration with the African Development Bank.
The CAS used the occasion to handover SATO taps to Tanathi WWDA which were donated by UNICEF for promotion of hand washing hygiene which is key in breaking the chain of spread of Covid-19.
