Candidates for the Nairobi governorship in the August 9 elections will be at the center of the storm on Monday when they debate their manifestos.
The televised debate will take place just one week before the vice presidential debate on July 19 and two weeks before the presidential debate on July 26.
Those battling for the seat include, Johnson Sakaja (UDA), Polycarp Igathe (Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition), Kenneth Nyamwamu of United Progressive Alliance(UPA), Independent candidates Esther Thairu and Agnes Kagure, Former journalist Denis Kodhe (LDP), Nancy Mwadime (Usawa Kwa Wote), Cleophas Mutua Kiio (Ford Kenya party) and Safina’s Herman Grewal.
The Presidential Debate Secretariat has selected four journalists to moderate the debate, which will take place at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) main campus in Karen, Nairobi.
According to the secretariat, the debate will be divided into two parts. The first will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will feature governor candidates whose popularity ratings are less than 5% based on three recent opinion polls.
The second debate, which will begin at 8:00 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m., will feature candidates who have polled above 5% in the same opinion polls.
The first-tier debate will be moderated by Serfine Achieng’ Ouma of KBC and Ayub Abdikadir of K24 TV, while the second-tier debate will be moderated by Zubeida Koome of KTN and Mark Masai of NTV.
Members of the public had until midnight on July 9, 2022, to submit questions for the candidates to answer.
