Police in Homa Bay have arrested a woman accused of stabbing her husband to death during a fight over a mobile phone at a bar in the town of Homa Bay.
On Wednesday afternoon, the suspect was apprehended after stabbing the 31-year-old man, Charles Okoth Onyango, while the couple was drinking.
Onyango worked for Homa Bay’s county government.
He died at the scene after being fatally wounded on the chest.
The deceased, according to witnesses, walked to a bar on Homa Bay-Kendu Bay Road and ordered some drinks.
He was sitting alone in a corner when a woman joined him shortly before she began drinking as well.
It was later revealed that it was his wife.
An argument erupted between them while they were drinking.
The suspect is alleged to have asked for Onyango’s mobile phone.
Her plan was to read text messages that the deceased had been receiving.
However, Onyango is said to have refused to hand over the phone and instead began accusing the suspect for questioning him.
What began as a simple conversation between the couple turned into a quarrel that drew the attention of others who were not interested in listening to their squabble.
Chief Joshua Ochogo of Homa Bay town location stated that the couple was under the influence of alcohol.
“They were drunk and their actions were controlled by alcohol,” he said.
When the argument heated up, the woman pulled out a knife and stabbed Onyango in the chest.
She had carried the knife in her handbag and appeared to be prepared to kill.
According to Mr. Ochogo, the suspect stabbed the deceased once before collapsing and dying.
Homa Bay Sub County Police Commander Sammy Koskeyi stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
“The suspect is in custody as investigators look into what led to their disagreement,” he said.
The deceased’s body was taken to the Homa Bay County teaching and referral hospital mortuary.
