Former Sofapaka Midfielder Naya Is Dead

Wisdom Naya, a former Sofapaka FC midfielder, has died.

Dinah Cherop, Naya’s mother, confirmed his death on Friday morning.

He died as a result of complications from an amputation that had affected other parts of his body.

The 19-year-old had his left leg amputated in January after being diagnosed with Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer, just when he had kick-started his professional football career.

While playing for St Anthony’s Boys High School, he was named Most Valuable Player at the 2018 Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 Africa Cup of Nations.

He joined Sofapaka in 2019 but was forced out due to what doctors thought was a knee injury. He left the club after only one season in 2020.

“We are saddened to have lost our former midfielder Wisdom Naya. The youngster has passed on due to soft tissue, Sarcoma. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Naya,”  Sofapaka FC said on Twitter.

He was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his knee and began chemotherapy at Eldoret Oncology Hospital.

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret later referred him to an Indian hospital for amputation.

He returned to Kenya on January 14 after a successful surgery in India to begin his recovery journey.

However, he died on Friday morning after a brief illness caused by complications from the amputation.
