One week after taking the oath of office, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja met with a group of newly-elected county assembly members in Mombasa.
Taking to his official Twitter handle on Saturday, September 3, Sakaja lauded Nairobi voters for electing the MCAs.
“My people of Nairobi, you chose well. These MCAs are really passionate about making a difference,” Sakaja said.
The County Assembly will hold its first meeting on September 9, during which they will elect a new Speaker.
The Mombasa meeting was reportedly intended to lay out the work plan and strategize on the election of the House leadership.
“We shall work together and make Nairobi a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity for all. Let’s make Nairobi Work. Asanteni sana (thank you very much),” Sakaja said.
However, Azimio-allied MCAs announced on Friday that they would not attend the meeting due to the Supreme Court’s pending decision on the presidential petition.
Ward reps, led by Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok, stated that they were acting on direct orders from Azimio leadership.
“We are still in court challenging presidential results and we have no time to discuss issues of assembly Speaker. He can do that with his UDA team,” Imwatok said.
They also questioned the source of the funds that would pay for the trip to Mombasa.
“As Azimio MCAs we will really want to know whether taxpayers money was spent on people who have not been sworn in as MCAs,” Kilimani MCA and Minority Whip Moses Ogeto said.
