The Speaker’s position has attracted interest from 37 candidates while 7 are interested in the Deputy Speaker’s position.
Those who have expressed an interest in the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly have until 8:30 p.m. to return their nomination papers.
Some of those who chose the nomination forms have already returned them ahead of the deadline tonight.
Among those who expressed interest in the Speaker’s position yesterday were Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula, presidential candidate David Mwaure Waihiga, Speaker of the 11th Parliament Kenneth Otiato Marende, Daniel Wanyonyi Opilo, William Wachira Mwaniki, Dorothy Kemunto Nyagori, and others.
asin Gichu Woman Rep Gladys Boss, Cnetral Imenti MP Moses Kirima Rarienda MP Otiende Amollo, Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma, and Wajir West MP Farah Yussuf Mohamed have all expressed interest in the position of Deputy Speaker.
According to recent reports, Amollo has dropped out of the race.
The National Assembly will hold its first session of the 13th Parliament tomorrow, Thursday, August 8, 2022, with the swearing in of members as the first order of business.
Following that, the House will elect its Speaker and Deputy Speaker by secret ballot.
Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition has picked Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the Senate Speaker seat and Kenneth Marende for the National Assembly Speaker position respectively.
Kalonzo had earlier pulled out of the National Assembly Speaker race during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), saying it was humiliating for him.
The two will face off with the Kenya Kwanza team who have fronted Moses Wetangula for the National Assembly and former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi for the Senate Speaker positions.
Azimio has also picked Kilifi Senator-elect Stewart Madzayo for Senate deputy speaker, while Farah Maalim will deputise Marende in the National Assembly.
