President William Ruto has formed an education reform working group tasked with evaluating the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) before submitting the final findings for approval.
The working party on education reform will be led by Raphael Munavu, and will include renowned teacher Peter Tabichi, Kenyatta Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina, and his counterpart from the University of Nairobi, Stephen Gitahi Kiama.
The taskforce will also have seven secretaries, including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Dr. David Njegere.
The other six secretaries are Dr. Elyas Addi, Patita Tingoi, Prof. Jackson Too, Dr. Reuben Nthamburi Mugwuku, Richard Miano and Eunice Gachoka.
It will be tasked with assessing before recommending which structures should be adopted and implemented in CBC.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya has appointed a working party on education reform,” the Gazette Notice read in part.
The Munavu-led task force will be expected to conduct a summative evaluation of CBC, as well as study all laws governing the basic education subsector and make recommendations for revisions to these laws in order to address duplication, ambiguities, efficiency constraints, and improving linkages.
The new team is also tasked with evaluating the examination framework as well as the teacher education and training framework for both preservice and in-service teachers.
Ruto further tasked the working party to look into the teachers’ deployment policies and general school governance.
“To review and recommend appropriate financing framework including capitation and minimum essential package grants for all basic education levels.
“To review and recommend a framework for physical and infrastructure development and coordination of public-private partnerships for improved access and quality provision,” Ruto stated through the Gazette Notice.
Other task force members include David Some, Halima Saado Abdilahi, Ciriaka Gitonga, Purity Mbaabu, Edward Katue Nzinga, Virginia Wahome, Robert Juma Wamalwa, Charles Kyalo Mutinda, Anthony Cheruiyot Sitienei, Bishop Geffrey Waweru Gichoki, Rev Seline Chepngeno Ronoh, Laila Abubakar, Daniel
Kizito Wangalwa, Augusta Mwihaki Muthigani, Peter Barasa, Ahmed Yussuf, Jone Mose, Hassan Mwakimako, Lynette Mwende Ndile, Wilson Kogo, and Stephen Mbugua Ngari are also members of the committee.
