Peter Imwatok’s designation as the leader of the majority of the Nairobi County Assembly has been revoked by newly elected Nairobi County Assembly speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi.
The nominations of the Honorable John Ndile Musila, MCA, Deputy Leader of the Majority, the Honorable Moses Ogeto, MCA, Majority Whip, the Honorable Stazo Omungala, MCA, Deputy Majority Whip, and the Honorable Catherine Akoth, MCA, Member of the Board were also withdrawn.
He claimed that the communication of the Azimio la Umoja leadership lineup was against the county assembly’s standing rules in a statement dated Friday, September 30.
In addition, he gave the coalition party instructions to again formally submit the names of the house leadership in accordance with the county assembly’s rules.
“From the foregoing, it is evident that the communication so relayed by the chair on Thursday, September 29, had no basis in law nor the Standing Orders for the following reasons –
“The Chair was not properly in office and hence incapable of receiving any communication nor providing the authority for the Clerk to act on it. The Communication did not originate from the nominating party Under Section 10 of the County Governments Act, 2012 and the Standing Orders,” read the statement in part.
He gave a thorough justification for his actions, claiming that the nomination and approval process had been carried out improperly and that he had miscommunicated the information.
When the aforementioned communication was allegedly received from the Azimio coalition and prepared for transmission to the House, the chair of the House Business Committee, who assists the Speaker in approving business to be transacted, had not yet taken office.
Additionally, he ordered investigations into the incident, describing it as an embarrassment.
On September 29, Ng’ondi was chosen as speaker under the support of the Raila Odinga-led faction.
