A 13-year-old son of North Eastern Deputy Regional Police Commander Patrick King’ori Macharia died after shooting himself in their Nairobi home.
According to the police report, Macharia and his wife found the teenager dead with his father’s pistol beside him.
According to the report filed at Mawe Mbili police station, the deputy commander had left his gun unattended and went for a short call as he prepared to leave for work.
When he came back, he found the pistol missing and inquired from the wife where it was before he learnt that the boy had locked himself in the bedroom with it.
“The room was locked from inside, he with the help of his wife broke into their son’s bedroom. Their son had shot himself on the left side of the head with one round which exited on the right side of the head,” read the statement filed with the police.
Police said the motive of the shooting remains unknown.
Detectives who visited the scene moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police said they seized the gun along with 29 rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge, pending further investigations.
