The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted December 8, 2022, as the date for the Bungoma senatorial by-election.
In a notice issued on Thursday, October 6, the IEBC announced the mini-election following Wetangula’s resignation after he was elected the Speaker of the National Assembly.
“Following the declaration of vacancy that occurred in the office of Member of Senate For Bungoma County confirmed by respective speakers of the senate vide a letter dated September 26, 2022, there shall be a by-election on Thursday, December 8,” the notice read in part.
“Each Political Party intending to participate in the by-elections shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Thursday, 13th October 2022.”
IEBC also gazetted the same date for by-elections in Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala, Mumias North and South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega and Siaya county assemblies.
“Pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 8784 of 2022 Vol. CXXIV No. 144 published on the 26th July, 2022, there shall be byelections for Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala Mumias North and South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega and Siaya County Assemblies, respectively, on the8th December 2022.”
Elections in these wards were postponed after some of the candidates for the seats died before the elections.
