Lamu county security agencies are on high alert following reports of imminent attacks in various parts of the county.
After leaflets warning of attacks began circulating last weekend, police increased security in major town centers, roads, and installations throughout the county.
“We saw the leaflets. They have been circulating and as expected we have intensified security,” Lamu County commissioner Irungu Macharia said.
The Swahili-language leaflets warn of ‘major attacks’ in Mokowe, Mpeketoni, and Hindi.
Macharia asked members of the public to volunteer information in order to prevent any potential incidents.
Although police have yet to authenticate the leaflets, officers said that based on the region’s security history, nothing is being left to chance.
Terrorists have previously targeted Lamu, resulting in mass casualties on most occasions.
Security in the North Coast region has been relatively peaceful in recent years, but security forces are still fighting al Shabaab insurgents in the vast Boni Forest.
