Civil societies led by the Kenya Peasants League (KPL) organized peaceful demonstrations outside the National Biosafety Authority offices, petitioning the government’s decision to lift the ban on GMOs.
Carrying a coffin outside these offices to represent the uncounted deaths caused by GMO products, the protesters demanded the advisory report that the NBA submitted to the cabinet informing them of the lifting of the GMO ban.
They also wanted answers on professor Kihumbi Thairu report, which informed the prohibition on GMO importation and growing, as well as information on whether issues presented by the Thairu commission had been resolved.
They sang chants and torched a coffin outside the headquarters to represent the ban on GMOs, which will cost many people their lives.
They gave the authorities 14 days to respond, and if they do not, they have vowed to launch national protests that will end up at these offices, as well as to go to court to oppose the move.
