Safaricom Sued Over ’Carelessness’ After Alleged Bank Fraud

A man has sued Safaricom seeking over Ksh 400,000 compensation.

Abdi Zeila has petitioned the largest network provider in Kenya and the East African region at large, in his case, the petitioner accused Safaricom of deliberate carelessness.

According to Abdi Zeila, on March 28, 2022, a sim-card swap was performed on his registered sim card number without his consent.

He claims that 373,000 shillings were withdrawn from his NCBA bank account number, and that additional funds were withdrawn from his Mshwari and KCB loan accounts.

Zeila goes on to say that this could only be possible if someone had access to the Safaricom system as well as the personal data of the targeted subscriber required for sim registration.

Zeila claims that despite reporting the incident to Safaricom, no action has been taken.

‘Safaricom, as the provider of roaming services to my number at the time, was aware or ought to have been aware that I could not have carried out a SIM-swap because I was out of jurisdiction,’ he claims.
