Cop Shoots Two Colleagues, Turns Gun on Self

A police officer on Sunday, October 23, shot and killed his two colleagues before turning the gun on himself at Moyale Police Station, Marsabit County.

According to the police report, the police constable, Lawrence Kumber, stole the firearm from a colleague before going to the armoury and killing two other cops.

According to witnesses, he met a colleague who was leaving duty and walking to his house within the station to pick up a document before returning his AK47 rifle.

Kumber took a stone and hit constable Noah Odero in the head, knocking him down, before picking up his rifle.

The assailant then proceeded to the station armoury, where he met the in-charge officer Corporal Francis Kokwe, killing him on the spot.

He then turned the gun on another officer, Ezekiel Matete, killing him at the armoury’s entrance.

According to witnesses and police, the assailant also shot and seriously injured a third officer in the shoulder as others in the area took cover.

He then fled the armoury to his house, where he locked himself in and burst his head with the rifle.

Long after the incident, his body was discovered in the house. The rifle was near the body.

The two injured officers were rushed to the hospital and were admitted in stable condition, while the bodies were moved to the local sub-county mortuary.

The motive for the incident is yet to be determined, according to Eastern Police Chief Rono Bunei.

However, officers have launched an investigation into the matter.

“The weapon and other exhibits have been collected as we investigate this unfortunate incident. We are yet to establish the motive,” he said.

He said the officer had last week been blacklisted among those to be given guns for work.

“He had been denied a gun last week because of his behaviour. He was blacklisted from being given a gun from the armoury.”
