Three people have been confirmed dead from the Kasarani building that went down yesterday, covering several people under the rubble.
According to Maurice Akech, General Manager for Research, Training, and Capacity Building at the National Construction Authority (NCA), twenty-two people have been rescued from the building as of Wednesday.
The other two died today; one died while receiving medical care, and the other was found dead in the rubble.
The number of people who are still trapped beneath the debris is unknown.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that the building’s developer lacked a permit, ignored warnings, and proceeded with construction.
Sakaja arrived at the scene on Wednesday and declared that the county would file legal charges against the building’s developer and contractor.
“This building had an enforcement notice since last year. NCA was here on Tuesday and closed the site but the contractor just went on. The developer did not get any permit from the county, he should be charged with murder,” Sakaja said.
The governor also asked the National Construction Authority (NCA) to submit a report on all buildings in the county that had been designated for stop-work orders so that appropriate action could be taken.
