‘Fake’ EACC Officer Arraigned In Court

A man arrested last Friday for impersonating EACC detectives was arraigned in Milimani court.

The anti-corruption watchdog filed a miscellaneous motion to hold Ibrahim Ngamau Wangari for 14 days to allow them to finish their investigations before charging him formally.

His advocate, however, opposed to the application, claiming that the EACC lacked the authority to bring the motion, which was filed in the Anti-Corruption court stating that the matter is criminal in nature.

They stated that the EACC officials should report the incident to the police station and that they cannot file it in court.

Wangari’s counsel informed the court that images of the suspect had been taken and shared on social media.

“Not only is that dehumanizing, but it also violates the Constitution.” The photographs were also circulated with TV stations in order to smear the suspect’s name before he is tried in court,” the court heard.

According to the application submitted in court, on November 25, EACC received claims of bribe demand from a complainant that Wangari was posing as an EACC investigator.

He was requesting a Sh1 million bribe to help him resolve EACC inquiries into his payment claims for maize flour subsidies.
