Police have discovered two more stolen firearms from a police armoury in Homabay County, bringing the total number of recovered firearms to three, with one still missing.
The two G-3 weapons were found Friday night by police personnel stationed at Kisumu county’s Nyamasaria patrol base.
The officers were on foot patrol in the middle of the night when a mysterious motorbike with no license plate sped up to them.
When the motorcyclist saw the authorities, he promptly made a U-turn while they tried in vain to remove the pillion passenger from the motorcycle.
The pillion rider lost a large luggage during the ensuing tussle as the numberless bike accelerated into the night.
Upon inspecting the suitcase, the officers recovered two G-3 riffles, 175 rounds of 7.62mm calibre, 9 7.62mm blanks, one spent 7.62mm catridge and one pair of handcuffs.
“Upon further inspection of the firearms, It was immediately established that the two G-3 rifles that had their butt stocks missing were part of the cache of firearms that had been stolen during an attack staged at Kipasi police post in Mbita, on the night of November, 16, 2022. Unknown number of thugs had broken into the station’s armoury under unclear circumstances and taken off with the firearms including three G-3 riffles, one AK-47 assault rifle and 110 rounds of ammunition,” said DCI.
The two firearms were found just 24 hours after investigators in Nyando, Kisumu county, apprehended the primary suspect Charles Nyumba Ongany, 27, and found another G-3 riffle that was a part of the stolen armory.
With all three G-3 rifles now retrieved and just the AK-47 assault rifle still missing, the total number of recovered firearms now stands at three. The pursuit of the last firearm is well underway.
“We thank members of the public who assisted us with information leading to the arrest of the main suspect yesterday and the subsequent recovery of the three firearms whose effects would have had devastating effects on the local population,” said DCI.
