The man suspected of killing a Greek national and leading a three-man gang harassing Nairobi residents will be detained in police custody for another 14 days while investigations continue.
Peter Waithaka, 33, was arraigned in Milimani court on Tuesday on a miscellaneous application to hold him for 21 days awaiting charges. However, senior chief magistrate Bernard Ochoi ordered that more investigations be conducted within the next two weeks.
An investigating officer informed the court that they have yet to perform a key identification parade, but they have taken his cell phone, which will assist in locating his accomplices at the murder scenes.
According to the investigating officer, Waithaka was also charged in the same court and freed in September last year after completing a 6-year term, according to the court. Waithaka, according to the officer, has not learned or changed.
Waithaka and his two companions are suspected of being involved in a number of crimes recorded in the Langata and Kilimani areas.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Waithaka’s group is accused of killing Greek national Alex Marcopaulo in October 2022.
Waithaka and two accomplices are claimed to have approached Marcopaulo at the Menellik-Ngong road intersection, robbed him, and then opened fire with a handgun, hurting the victim on the right side of his chest before escaping on a motorbike.
On September 29, armed criminals attacked four Dutch tourists outside Silver Harbour apartment along Kindaruma road and stole them of their cell phones, cash, and jewelry before leaving on a motorcycle with hidden plate numbers towards Ngong road.
Waithaka was arrested and led detectives to his residence in Wangige, Kiambu county, where items relevant to the robberies were found, including the clothes seen in CCTV footage at the time of the offenses, a watch, and a ring.
