Raila Defends Cherera 4 Hotel Visits By Azimio

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, has broken his silence following claims that several senior coalition members visited four embattled electoral officials at a downtown residence.

Speaking to a local TV station on Tuesday, December 28, the former Azimio presidential candidate defended the visits, saying his team was protesting the outcome of the election and wanted to know “the truth'”.

“The politicians were justified to visit these commissioners because they were saying ‘No’. Our people were actually justified in finding out the truth because that was already ex post facto,”

A tribunal investigating the four commissioners was told last week that Azimio Executive Director Raphael Tuju and suspended KANU Secretary General Nick Salat paid a visit to the four at an apartment in Yaya booked for them following their news conference at the Serena Hotel disowning the findings.

The commissioners, led by then Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi rejected the findings announced by Chebukati on grounds that the final tally was “opaque”.

Simon Miller, the accommodations manager of Yaya flats, corroborated the visists when he appeared before the tribunal led by Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule on December 22.

The disclosures came during the allegations against Masit, the only commissioner of the ‘Cherera Four’ who has yet to quit.

CCTV footage from the flats purportedly showed the suspended commissioner walking to the lift that would take her to the room, which was shown during the session. However, the video was hazy.
