A man was charged at Mombasa Law Court with defrauding UAP Old Mutual Insurance Company by fabricating the deaths of his family members.
Philip Odero Kauma is accused of obtaining Sh600,000 from UAP Old Mutual Insurance after fabricating the deaths of three relatives.
He was charged with three charges of acquiring money through deception and one count of attempting to gain money through deception.
In the first count, Kauma confessed to fraudulently receiving Sh100,000 as a final cost claim from a local insurance company on June 2, 2021, at a Mombasa County bank branch by falsely claiming that Veronica Anyango Odero died on June 16, 2021.
In the second count, he admitted to obtaining Sh100,000 as a final cost claim from the insurance on September 2, 2021 at a Mombasa County branch by fraudulently claiming that Benedetta Makanda Kauma was deceased.
In the third count, Kauma admitted to accepting Sh 250, 000 as the last expenditure claim from the same insurance company on October 5, 2021 at the same Mombasa County branch by fraudulently claiming that Benedetta Makanda Kauma was deceased.
In the fourth count, the accused attempted to get Sh500,000 as a final cost from UAP on October 5, 2021 by fraudulently claiming that Serephine Anyango Juma died on August 30, 2021.
