On Sunday, a fire broke out in the Njuki-ini forest in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, destroying a three-quarter-acre section of the forest.
The fire was contained by early evening, according to Peter Ng’ang’a, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) chief of conservancy in the area.
Ng’ang’a said that the local community members extinguished the fire with the assistance of forest rangers, conservation officers, and firefighters from the county headquarters in Kerugoya.
“We were able to limit the fire in a reasonable amount of time. It would have been a different scenario if it had happened at night,” he remarked.
There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
