A suspected armed robber was killed on Friday night in Githurai 44, Nairobi, during a botched robbery attempt. The unidentified robber had planned an ambush on a man who had just arrived at his apartment and was headed home for the night.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the robber emerged from a row of dark structures across the road, brandishing a firearm at the man. The robber ransacked the man’s pockets before hopping on a getaway motorbike that had just arrived.
Unknown to the gang, a police patrol team from Kasarani Police Station was nearby and responded to the distress call from the victim. The officers spotted the getaway motorbike and followed. As they closed in on the bike, the armed robber disembarked and started running on foot towards a footpath while shooting toward the officers.
In response, one of the officers opened fire and killed the suspect, effectively ending the chase.
The robber’s accomplice, who rode the bike, managed to escape.
The police recovered a Czeska pistol loaded with four rounds of 9mm caliber following the chase. The body of the suspect is currently at the City morgue awaiting identification.
