Douglas Kanja Kirocho Sworn In As Deputy Inspector-General Of Police

Douglas Kanja Kirocho has been sworn in as the new Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of police.

Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the event, which took place at the Supreme Court buildings.

Koome congratulated Kirocho and encouraged him to maintain a close working relationship with the public.

“I urge you to foster close working relations and trust between the police and the people and communities that the police serve. This is necessary given the reality that policing becomes effective when the public and three communities cooperate with police in the fight against crime and maintenance of social order,” she said.

She further reiterated the need to abide by the law in performing his duties.

“One of the mandates of the Kenya Police Service is to ensure the safety and security of the Kenyan people and their properties. The police service is expected to discharge this mandate within the confines of the constitutionally envisaged democratic policing whilst remaining accountable to the Kenyan people. I am confident that in the performance of your duties you will observe the rule of law functioning within the dictates of the Constitution,” she said.

Chairman of the National Police Service Commission, Eliud Kinuthia, stated that Korocho must hit the ground running in his new position.

“The work of the DIG is clearly cut out. Kindly fast track the pending matters like personnel issues so that they do not have to proceed to the judiciary,” he said.

Inspector-General of Police Japheth Koome on his part reiterated the role of the police “to serve our country with diligence”. He went on to thank CJ Koome for promising to digitally link the OB with the judiciary.

Kirocho succeeds Edward Mbugua who proceeded on terminal leave last month. He served as the Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) before his latest appointment by President Ruto on Wednesday, 12th April.

Deputy Inspector General – Administration Police Service, Noor Gabow and Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin were also in attendance.
