Law Society of Kenya, Kisumu chapter have asked the independent police oversight Authority (IPOA)and the office of Director of public prosecution (DPP) to expedite the investigation of police shooting in Kisumu County
Led by LSK Chairperson Dorcas Oluoch they have faulted the police in Kisumu for using excess force while dealing with citizens.
“The police have historically been heavy handed towards the interaction with citizens in this county.
And as such impunity more particularly the use of excessive force has become a deeply entrenched systemic problem”, she said.
They have continued to condemn the use of excessive force by police towards Kisumu residents and want urgent action to be taken.
However, they promised to monitor the unfolding of these events.
“We commit ourselves with a view to defend the rights of those who are affected, and uphold the rule of law as our mandate”, she added.
Police in Kisumu County shot and killed one person and injured four others in a bid to arrest a matatu driver and impound his vehicle.
The seventeen-year girl was a form three student who succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
