The foreign minister of Papua New Guinea resigned following a row over the country’s official delegation to King Charles III’s coronation.
Justin Tkatchenko traveled with his daughter Savannah, who documented her first-class flight and shopping spree in Singapore on TikTok.
He called her critics “primitive animals” on Wednesday.
Mr. Tkatchenko’s remarks sparked protests outside Parliament House in Port Moresby on Friday.
Mr. Tkatchenko stated in a statement on Friday that he “stood aside” after consulting with Prime Minister James Marape.
He also expressed concern that recent events would interfere with upcoming official visits by US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I also want to ensure the truth of this matter is cleared and the misinformation and lies are corrected,” he said.
Mr. Tkatchenko and his daughter were criticized for traveling with at least 10 officials to see the coronation of King Charles, at a cost of almost $900,000, according to the local newspaper Post-Courier.
