On Friday, May 12, stakeholders in private universities rejected President William Ruto’s and Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu’s proposal for a tertiary institution funding model.
According to the stakeholders, the proposal to only fund public institutions disadvantaged and discriminated against them as taxpayers.
“We have a right to enjoy the fruits of our labor.” “These taxes should be channeled to all students, whether they attend public or private universities,” Machakos University’s Judy Chania argued.
“All of our efforts to fight for government sponsorship of students in private universities have gone unnoticed,” she added.
They advised the government to emulate former Education Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s strategies. The government investigated ways for private universities to accept State-funded students during Matiangi’s reign.
