Man Faces Death Penalty For Stealing Sh 25,800 Phone

A middle-aged man risks a death penalty for stealing a phone valued Sh 25,800.

Dennis Mbugua Wanjiku may see his entire life in prison after being implicated in a robbery with violence case.

The suspect was charged today in a Nairobi Court over robbery with violence contrary to section 296 (2) of the Penal Code.

He was charged that on June 3, 2023, at around 8 PM in the Kencom area along Moi Avenue in Nairobi, jointly with others at large robbed a woman and threatened to use actual violence at the time of the offense.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at Milimani Law Courts, he denied the allegations and the Court fixed June 7, for bond determination.

According to the Law, robbery with violence is a capital offence in Kenya punishable by death or life imprisonment upon conviction.

In terms of possible harm and penalties, aggravated robbery crimes are the most serious.
These offenses generally involve a weapon, serious injury to a victim, a home invasion or carjacking, or a vulnerable victim. A person convicted of aggravated robbery could face 20 or more years in prison.

Generally, the harshest penalties are reserved for robberies where the offender is actually armed or causes serious injuries to a victim.
