Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Youth Affairs The Arts and Sports, witnessed the signing of an MOU between the Collection Management Organisations (CMO).
In an effort to address royalties-related concerns in Kenya, the MOU will, among other things, unify the Collection and Management of royalties.
The CS assured the CMOs that the government would support them as they worked to improve royalties management by urging them to embrace the new dawn and collaborate on providing solutions aimed at enhancing the welfare of Kenyan artists.
“I want you to focus on providing solutions to the industry. I want to see the fruits of an effective Memorandum and that can only be achieved by looking forward and not dwellingbonthe past,” said Namwamba.
Speaking on behalf of the CEOs of the CMOs, Ezekiel Mutuasaid that the agreement marked a new era for the ecosystem of royalties management and that the union will increase the effectiveness of revenue management and collection for artists.
He gave the CS assurance that the CMOs will work with the government to implement the #PesaMfukoni agenda.
The chairs of the three Collection Management Organisations, including the Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) and the Kenya Association of Music Producers (MCSK), praised the CS for bringing them together and pledged to work together to increase revenue collection for artists.
Owners of copyrights appoint a collective management organisation (CMO) to oversee the rights to their works. A CMO manages the licencing of rights, the collection of royalties, and the enforcement of rights on behalf of the copyright holders.
