SRC Proposes Increase In MCAs’ Gross Salaries By Ksh10,000

Members of the County Assembly who have been protesting will most likely see a pay increase in the coming fiscal year if the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) follows through on wage review proposals.

The SRC revealed a Ksh.10,000 increase in MCA gross salaries during its presentation to County Assembly Service Boards on the third public service remuneration and benefits review cycle.

MCAs are currently paid Ksh.144,375 per month, with a committee sitting allowance of Ksh.62,400. The SRC proposed raising MCAs’ gross salaries to Ksh.154,481 in the fiscal year 2023/2024 while maintaining the sitting allowance. Salaries will be raised to Ksh.164,588 in the fiscal year 2024/2025.

However, one of the major requests from MCAs, the plenary sitting allowances, was not met. It was one of the reasons county assemblies were forced to close after the SRC threatened to abolish them.

However, benefits such as official transportation, medical benefits, retirement benefits, car loans, and mortgage benefits are still available.

Among the other demands made by MCAs are the reinstatement of the Ksh.2 million car grant and the establishment of a fully anchored Ward Development Fund at 40% of the County Development Budget.

They also want to establish a County Affirmative Action Fund for nominated MCAs. The ward representatives also want the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to remove the 30% tax on their car reimbursements.

So far, the counties of Narok, Mandera, Kericho, Embu, Tana River, Kisii, Marsabit, Makueni, Wajir, Garissa, Mombasa, Kwale, Nakuru, Kajiado, Nyamira, Laikipia, West Pokot, and Samburu have closed.
