Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the government will reinstate the security detail of Azimio leaders after three months, ensuring no street demonstrations.
“The security personnel were recalled to bridge a shortfall of officers needed to quell the protests. After seeing what they did on Wednesday at the Nairobi Expressway, we had to be prepared” Gachagua said.
The security detail of Azimio principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, and over 50 MPs was withdrawn two weeks ago during anti-government street protests.
The opposition called for the government to lower the escalating cost of living and suspend controversial tax proposals in the Finance Bill, 2023.
Security was also withdrawn at former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta’s homes and governors Anyang Nyong’o, Gladys Wanga, Ochilo Ayacko, and James Orengo.
Ruto signaled an end to the protests after meeting with Raila and reaching a consensus that the opposition would not call for mass action again.
