HELB Initiates Distribution of Tuition Loans to Over 245,000 Students

Over 245,000 students, including undergraduate and continuing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students, will now receive tuition loans from the Higher Education Loan Board (HELB).

The loans, which come under the Old Higher Education Funding Model (OFM), will help more than 175,000 undergraduate students out of this total, with an additional 70,000 enrolling in TVET programmes.

According to a statement issued by HELB CEO Charles Ringera on Wednesday, the loans are being dispersed in accordance with the students’ preferred payment options, giving them the option of using a bank account or the HELB Mobile Wallet.

“Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs), including universities and colleges, are urged to facilitate students’ registration, as tuition fees for various institutions have already been disbursed. These funds should be reflected in the respective bank accounts of HLIs by October 5, 2023,” said HELB CEO.

He said that new students have till October 7 to submit their loan and scholarship applications for the New Higher Education Model (NFM), in accordance with an extension given by Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu on September 5.

Following the October 7 deadline, processing and distribution of student loans and scholarships will start under the new funding scheme.
