EACC: Assets Worth Over Ksh23B Recovered In The Last Five Years

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), they were able to recover assets worth Ksh.23.74 billion from 2018.

This was revealed during a workshop with crime and governance journalists on Wednesday, during which the commission stated that they have made significant progress in combating graft in the country.

EACC director of Field Services and Coordination Jackson Mue stated that they were able to trace the assets thanks to compact investigative structures that aided their mandate.

He added that the anti-graft body is also pursuing the forfeiture of assets worth Ksh.40.78 billion that they believe were obtained corruptly.

Similarly, EACC claims to have avoided a loss of approximately Ksh.30 billion during the same time period.

Despite claiming victories in the fight against corruption, EACC admits that they are still burdened by ongoing derailments.

According to Mue, they face budgetary constraints because only 34% of the annual budget allocation is dedicated to carrying out its operations.

“…Sixty-six per cent is set aside for the salaries,” he said, adding that the commission enjoys funding of about Ksh.3.4 billion annually.

Other challenges include the politicization of the fight against graft, slow judicial processes which impede the administration of justice and impersonation of EACC officers.

“About every week we arrest one impersonator of an EACC officer,” said Mue.
