A GSU Officer commits suicide in Mandera County

A General Service Unit (GSU) officer died by suicide in Lafey, Mandera County.

According to initial police reports from the Mandera County Police Command, the officer—who was stationed at the Lafey GSU camp—reportedly used his assigned firearm to take his own life while on duty.

Colleagues rushed to the scene after hearing a single gunshot and found the officer with a fatal wound to the head.

This incident marks the third suicide by a security officer in the North Eastern region in the last two months, intensifying calls for the National Police Service (NPS) to address the mental health crisis and “burnout” among officers stationed in high-stress, frontier zones.

Local authorities have moved the body to the Mandera County Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy and notification of the family.
