President William Ruto has joined millions around the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis, describing him as a moral compass and servant leader whose life left a lasting impression on humanity.
In a statement released Monday morning following the announcement from the Vatican, President Ruto paid tribute to the late pontiff’s humility, global influence, and unwavering compassion for the marginalized.
“We join the Catholic Church and the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis,” the President said. “This is a big loss to the Catholic faithful and the Christian world.”
President Ruto praised Pope Francis for his servant leadership, noting his dedication to inclusivity, justice, and care for the vulnerable.
“He exemplified servant leadership through his humility, his unwavering commitment to inclusivity and justice, and his deep compassion for the poor and the vulnerable,” he said.
“His strong ethical and moral convictions inspired millions across the world, regardless of faith or background.”
Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, passed away early Monday in Vatican City after a period of declining health. His papacy, which began in 2013, was widely seen as transformative — marked by outreach to the poor, calls for climate justice, and a drive to make the Church more open and pastoral.
As Kenya joins the global community in mourning, churches across the country are expected to hold memorial Masses in honour of a pontiff many saw as a friend of Africa and a voice of moral clarity in turbulent times.
“May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace,” President Ruto concluded.
