Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has raised questions about the significance of the ongoing Africa Climate Summit being hosted by President William Ruto at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC).
Taking to X formerly Twitter to express his reservations about the choice of Nairobi as the summit’s location, Ledama suggested that the event should have instead been held in a desert to better align with its climate-focused theme.
“A Real climate change conference should be held in a DESERT like Burning Man then these talks can stop being talks about nothing!,” he tweeted.
He referred to the summit as “mere talk with nothing to offer” and recommended that the Kenyan government should have taken inspiration from the Burning Ma project, an American company known for organizing events in desert environments.
“Hypocrisy of the highest order! We are here talking about climate change and up above the main hall a Helicopters, which is responsible for a significant part of the carbon footprint in the world is hovering over,”
The summit officially began today and will run until Wednesday August 6.
Yesterday, President William Ruto made a symbolic entrance to the Africa Youth Climate assembly event by driving himself in an electric car from State House Nairobi to KICC.
The Africa Climate Summit aims to provide a platform for policy makers, practitioners, businesses, and civil society to exchange ideas on climate solutions, discuss barriers to overcome, and explore opportunities in different regions.
The summit is seen as a crucial step leading up to the first global stock take, scheduled to conclude in the United Arab Emirates in December of this year.
