Acting IG Masengeli Calls for Action Amid Increased Road Accidents

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IG) has convened a meeting following a recent surge in road accidents across the country.

In a statement dated September 17, 2024, the police boss attributed the accidents to indiscipline among some road users.

On the other hand, he also expressed concern over the conduct of some of the traffic unit officers, including corruption and bribery.

Therefore, Masengeli revealed that a high-level security meeting had been convened to discuss the recent developments of the roads, further calling on Kenyans to observe traffic laws.

“We have observed an increase in road traffic accidents across the country, and that is the reason for which we convened this consultative meeting with all Regional Traffic Enforcement Officers to address the road carnage issue, and corruption in the Traffic Unit,” he remarked.

Masengeli urged members of the public to abide by the traffic rules.

“We call upon all members of the public to ensure compliance with road safety requirements,” part of the statement read.

The IG’s statement comes amid an increase in road accidents which has led to several deaths.

According to data by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) over 1,000 Kenyans have lost their lives to road carnages this year.

Meanwhile, the acting IG who has been in the spotlight over the withdrawal of Justice Lawrence Mugambi, detailed that other officers had already been attached to him.

Masengeli maintained that security officers initially attached to the judge were recalled to attend training.

“In the case of Hon. Justice Mugambi, the two security officers in question are General Duty Officers and were therefore recalled to attend VIP security training, and were replaced by two VIP protection Officers from the Judiciary Police Unit,’ the acting IG stated.
