Activist Boniface Mwangi Sentenced To Two Months In Prison

Machakos High Court has sentenced activist Boniface Mwangi to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh.300K for contempt of court.

Mwangi was in contempt in a defamation case where he was sued by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.

Justice Rayola Olel on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, slapped Mwangi with a civil jail term after he disobeyed an order requiring him to apologise and retract all defamatory statements on his social media accusing the CS of destroying his house in Lukenya, Athi River, Machakos County.

While sentencing the activist, the judge has also extended the gag order barring him from posting any information regarding the case to January 2024 pending the determination of the defamation suit by Mutua.

Mwangi was found guilty of contempt of court on October 16.

Mutua filed contempt of court proceedings against Mwangi saying he had failed to obey court orders requiring him to issue an apology and retract all the libelous content he published across his social media platforms.

The CS told the court that Mwangi published the defamatory statements with the intention to injure his reputation.
