Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspect linked to what they described as viral inflammatory public utterances circulating on social media, warning that inciteful content poses a threat to public cohesion and national stability.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, DCI said the suspect, Evans Onyango Kawala, also known as “Kidero Jasuba”, was arrested in the Shujaa Mall area in Kayole during an operation by detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU).
The agency said the 33-year-old is in custody undergoing processing pending arraignment.
“The DCI cautions the public against making public utterances or disseminating content that incites violence, spreads hatred, or undermines peace and national unity,” the statement read, adding that those found culpable will face legal action.
The arrest comes a day after Siaya Governor James Orengo, in a post on X, claimed the government had abducted Kawala, describing him as a vocal champion of the Jacaranda Bunge la Mwananchi.
Orengo demanded Kawala’s “immediate and unconditional release,” saying the activist was taken for “speaking truth to power”.
