Gor Mahia’s dream of clinching a third consecutive FKF Premier League title hit a snag on Monday after their archrivals AFC Leopards came from behind to secure a spirited 1-1 draw in the 97th edition of the Mashemeji Derby, played at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
Austin Odhiambo’s first-half stunner had set Gor Mahia on course to close the gap with league leaders Kenya Police FC, but a defensive lapse allowed Brian Wanyama to volley home an equaliser in the 50th minute, leaving the two Kenyan giants to share the spoils.
The result means Gor Mahia move into second place with 55 points—level with Tusker FC but six points adrift of leaders Kenya Police FC—with only two matches left in the season.
The clash began on a cautious note, but it was Gor Mahia who took early initiative.
After missing a few promising chances, including a diving header by Benson Omalla, K’Ogalo finally broke the deadlock in the 31st minute.
A fluid move involving Alpha Onyango and Lawrence Owino found Austin Odhiambo in space.
The midfield maestro danced past two defenders before unleashing a right-footed rocket past a helpless Levis Opiyo in goal.
Despite AFC Leopards nearly hitting back five minutes later, the defending champions held firm to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Coach Fred Ambani’s halftime adjustments bore fruit quickly. In the 50th minute, Gor Mahia’s backline failed to clear a loose ball, and Brian Wanyama capitalised with a well-taken volley to level the match.
With the equaliser, Leopards gained confidence, pushing for a potential winner, but both teams eventually settled for a point each in a fixture that lived up to its billing.
Title Race Wide Open
The draw leaves Gor Mahia with a mountain to climb.
With Police FC on 61 points, the 21-time champions must win their remaining two games—against Ulinzi Stars and a potentially decisive clash versus Police FC—to stand a chance.
Meanwhile, Tusker FC, also on 55 points, remain mathematically in the race and will face Kariobangi Sharks and Kakamega Homeboyz in their run-in.
