Kenya is among the countries facing the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a recent report from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Following the recent spike in instances, Kenya and Mauritius are the only two African Union (AU) member states categorized in the said category, according to a report released on Thursday.

“Two member States (Kenya and Mauritius) experienced a 6th COVID-19 wave. Since the last briefing, One additional member State (Kenya) is experiencing the 6th wave,” stated Africa CDC.

Kenya is also listed among the states with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in another database for the period of June 6-12.

Kenya is estimated to have increased by 92% over the same period, placing it fourth behind South Africa, Morocco, and Ethiopia.

“The following 5 countries are reporting the highest number of new cases: South Africa (10,385), Morocco (5,410), Ethiopia (3,951), Kenya (1,591) and Zambia (1,076),” read the report.

As a result, the continent’s death rate fell by 5% over that time.

Kenya, as one of the world’s five most populous countries, saw no change in its death rate throughout time.

This comes as Kenya’s Ministry of Health confirmed 427 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday, a rise of 12.9 percent from May, when the positivity rate was around 3.8 percent.
