Alan Donovan Dies At 83

Alan Donovan, the renowned African Heritage House’s founder, has died.

Donovan, 83, died quietly in his sleep Sunday morning at his home in Athi River, according to a statement from African Heritage Estate management.

For more than 50 years, the acclaimed art collector will be recognized for his remarkable involvement in Kenya’s cultural affairs and for supporting the ideology of Pan-Africanism.

The African Heritage Gallery was co-founded by the environmentalist and Kenya’s first vice-president, Joseph Murumbi, almost 50 years ago.

The gallery, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, is a showcase of African culture and heritage.

It sits on an 8-acre plot of land that overlooks the enormous Nairobi National Park and has a turreted exterior modeled after Mali mosques and the geometric designs of a Nigerian emir’s palace.

It houses a priceless collection of African art.
