Alexander-Arnold Boosts Real Madrid’s Club World Cup Quest Ahead of Dortmund Clash

Trent Alexander-Arnold is quickly settling into life at Real Madrid as the Spanish giants prepare to face Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Madrid paid around €10 million to secure the England international’s early release from Liverpool before his contract expired, and the move is already paying dividends. Alexander-Arnold provided a pinpoint assist for Gonzalo Garcia’s winner in the 1-0 last-16 victory over Juventus, showcasing the kind of creativity that persuaded Los Blancos to fast-track his arrival.

Playing as a right wing-back in Xabi Alonso’s newly implemented back-three system, the 26-year-old has looked increasingly confident after a shaky debut in a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal. His set-piece delivery and crossing ability have drawn high praise from teammates.

“In training, he is horrible to play against. His corners are another level,” said goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. “As a goalkeeper, it’s a nightmare, but it’s making me better.”

Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has returned from a long injury layoff but may find himself redeployed as a centre-back due to Alexander-Arnold’s impact in wide areas. Alongside the new signing, Madrid’s defence has also been bolstered by young Dutch talent Dean Huijsen.

While Madrid defeated Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final and thrashed them 5-2 in this season’s group stage, both sides have undergone major changes. Alonso is now leading Madrid after his success at Bayer Leverkusen, while Niko Kovac has rejuvenated Dortmund since taking charge in January, securing Champions League qualification for next season.

Dortmund will be without Jobe Bellingham, who is suspended after picking up a yellow card in their 2-1 win over Monterrey. That rules out a high-profile showdown with his brother Jude Bellingham, who remains central to Madrid’s plans.

Kylian Mbappé, who has scored 43 goals this season, is expected to return to the starting XI after recovering from a stomach illness. Though Gonzalo Garcia has netted three goals during the tournament, the 21-year-old may make way for the French star.

“We’re building something special,” said head coach Alonso. “Trent and the others are bringing fresh energy. Now we have to keep the momentum going.”

With a potential semi-final showdown against former club Paris Saint-Germain looming, Mbappé and Madrid will be eager to continue their march toward Club World Cup glory, now with Alexander-Arnold firmly in their ranks.
